Day 5: Deeper Meaning, Robben Island

morning

Today will be one filled with deeper context and meaning. We will explore the colorful, but torn history of South African culture as we travel to a place notorious for struggle and persecution: Robben Island. The bus for waterfront pier leaves at 8:00 prompt.

Mid morning to late afternoon

Many have heard the story, but few have stood on the grounds and seen the cells, bars and labor yards where Nelson Mandela spent 18 out of his 27 years of imprisonment. Immerse yourself in what was a symbol of the South African apartheid regimes power and human destruction. We will take a boat to reach the 2-mile wide island; about 7 miles off the coast.

afternoon / evening to night

Robben Island will be an intensive experience emotionally and spiritually. After returning to the mainland about 3:00 pm, we will have a late lunch at Cape Grace; a 5-star hotel on Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. From there it is all rest and relaxation. Tomorrow will be the start of another layer to this voyage.
